(Oct.4-6, 2017) We had “Doctor G’s Case Files” in Cambodia. (“Doctor G” is a famous Japanese TV program on which young doctors try to come to a correct diagnosis through different factors, including watching “re-play” videos, results of medical tests, patients’ life habits, medical history, etc. )
From October 4th to 6th, 2017, Dr. Shogo Akabame, a general doctor, visited three national hospitals(Khmer Soviet Friendship, Kossamak, and Calmette Hospital) to hold the case study work shop. Dr. Shogo, upon the request from Side by Side, he prepared a case study for attendees with many slides. The main purpose for the workshop is not to teach about one specific disease. It is to help the medical staff, instead of judging quickly based on their knowledge and past experiences, but to come up with diagnostic imaging and differential diagnosis, considering variety of possibilities of disease. The accurate diagnosis is imperative for the appropriate treatment which results in early recovery of the patients. (In Cambodia, most cases, family of the patients must stay at the hospital to take care of the patients.)

September 11, 2017, SBSI cooperated a first aid workshop for NGO workers from different Japanese NGOs in Cambodia, which was hosted by JICA Cambodia Office. Mr. Ken Tsuhako who is an EMS chief at Kawasaki Fire Department, and other professional volunteers taught 24 attendees. The teachers including 2 young paramedic students from Kokushikan University taught CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) on babies, children, and adults. Because there were many training equipment including the ones brought from japan, the attendees had a chance to practice for longer time than usual, which turned out to be very meaningful. Unlike in Japan, there are very few people who attended CPR and first aid lesson like this in Cambodia. Therefore some mentioned that they want other staff in their organizations who couldn’t attend that day attend next time, that they want us to have workshops on other first aid, etc.
We would like to extend our gratitude to JICA Cambodia Office and Ms. Ogawa from JICA Japan desk and Ms. Minami from FIDR who cooperated this workshop and Sunrise Japan Hospital that rented some equipment, and Mr. Ishizaki who provided the text book.

SBSI held a workshop in the afternoon on the 30th of May for nurses and doctors at Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital.
The lectures were given by Prof. Claude Rochen, Ms. Amber Smid (from Wisconsin) and Ms. Hailey Nygard from Colorado.
Professor Claude gave a lectures on Topic Cardiac & ECG’s
Ms. Smid Ms. Nygard gave a lecture on Respiratory NICU/ PICU & Family Centered Care.
These wonderful teachers taught 53 nurses and doctors, Everyone was eager to learn and truly happy to get more and better knowledge about diagnostic measures and treatment. Many questions were asked and answered. SBSI is going to continue to contribute to the improvement of skill and knowledge of medical staff in Cambodia.
